Drug Testing for DOT

The DOT is introducing big changes in 2018!

As of January 1, the DOT drug test, or the test for controlled substances, will look for the following five classes of drugs:

  • Marijuana
  • Cocaine
  • Four semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone) *effective in 2018
  • Amphetamines and methamphetamines
  • Phencyclidine – PCP

With a focus on opioids, the drug panel changes are effective across the entire DOT – and every agency must make changes necessary for compliance.

The 2018 changes removed the blind specimen requirement, removed methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDEA), and added methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) to the initial amphetamines test. Some of the changes clarify medical marijuana is not permitted in DOT safety-sensitive roles, even if the state has legalized.

The Medical Review Officer analyzing the test results may also be validating prescriptions with the new language accounting for the testing of four opioids commonly prescribed by doctors.

CDL Drug Testing

The FMCSA states no CDL class driver can have or use (on or off duty):

  • Any schedule I substance
  • Any amphetamine or formulation of an amphetamine (including pep pills and bennies)
  • Narcotics or derivatives
  • Any other substance that makes driving unsafe

If a driver produces a positive DOT drug test, he/she must be immediately removed from the safety-sensitive role. If the results come back indicating tampering, the employee must be treated as someone who refused to test and removed from the role immediately.

What information is needed for a DOT drug test?

A DOT drug test analyzes the urine for evidence of drug use. The agency requires this test. Before the sample is collected, we will need the following information indicated on the DOT-approved form:

  • Full name of the employee
  • Employee’s SSN or ID number
  • Laboratory name and address (can be pre-printed)
  • Employer’s name, address, phone and fax (can be pre-printed)
  • Medical Review Officer (MRO) name, address, phone and fax (can be pre-printed)
  • Checkmark the DOT agency that will regulate the employee’s safety-sensitive duties
  • Reason for the test (Pre-employment; Random; Reasonable Suspicion/Reasonable Cause; Post-Accident; Return-to-Duty; and Follow-up)
  • Whether the collection is to be observed or not
  • (Optional) Our name, address, phone, and fax number
